Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disorder, affecting 2% of the population worldwide. In the majority of patients, it appears before the age of 40. The immune system, genetic and environmental factors play a major role in the pathogenesis. The characteristic skin lesions - red, thick, scaly and itchy plaques - present most often on the scalp, knees and elbows but can develop anywhere on the body. Nails and joints can also be affected. Psoriasis is a lifelong condition with remissions and relapses, impacting the patients’ quality of life. |
